If the owner of a web resource wants to announce all new materials, he creates an RSS feed. This is a program that, when new content appears, takes from it the title, part (possibly all) of the content and records the information in XML format.

What is an RSS aggregator?

RSS-aggregator is the same parser. It reads the feed (one or more) offered in the settings and forms a document in XML format. That’s why people call them “readers”. They are:

  • client-side;
  • installed on web resources.

The average Internet user does not need to create an RSS-aggregator. It can be installed as a widget (add-on) to the browser. Firefox already has an aggregator built in. If you go to a web page from the content of which is formed RSS-feed, then in the panel “Bookmarks” will be active button “subscribe to news feeds”.

Aggregators installed on web resources, broadcast an announcement of the material in the form of a link to it, and sometimes part of the content. Such a “reader” makes the site-acceptor interesting, filled with relevant and rapidly changing information. There are also aggregators on Internet portals. The “News” service has a subsection “My News”, where the Internet user subscribes to the delivery of information on the topic of interest.

Why subscription?

The term “RSS subscription” is conditional. It is an analog of postal “subscription” to newspapers and magazines. News delivered via RSS channel is free of charge. No signature or commitment is required from the user.

RSS and SEO

RSS feed actively participates in the process of indexing the site. A user who subscribes to the news from the site becomes its regular audience and increases its traffic. Links leading from outside resources to the site with a feed are not considered by search engine robots as “selling”. They increase TIC and PageRank. However, the opinion that the channel of fresh news from the site – the key to its rapid “promotion” is incorrect.

Search engine robots may consider that the news announcements taken from the RSS channel, belong to the site where they first found them. Collision “whose material?” is solved in favor of the site on which the news is faster indexed.

Going to the link to the source site, indexed later, the robot believes that before him plagiarism. As a result – a decrease in rating and even a possible ban (if most of the materials are considered plagiarized).

An RSS feed can be easily embedded in your email campaign. However, before you start, make sure your RSS or Atom feed is valid.

You don’t need to program the code yourself – there are many providers that provide the necessary technology. All you have to do is enter the feed’s source URL and copy the generated HTML code to your website.

You’ll need a “feed generator”, which is a program that generates the HTML code needed for the web from a source XML file. A Google search results in a sufficient selection of free offerings. You do not need to install anything, just enter the data into the web form

If necessary, you can add a few design details. After clicking “Show my code”, the service will generate HTML code. Then enter the resulting URL in the city on your website.

The submission generator form usually already shows a preview so that you can directly evaluate the project. Embed the HTML code in your website where you want the feeds to appear (usually a place on top of the header or a place near the left or right menu column). The example shown is integrated into the design of the final site:

Between 2000 and 2020, the popularity of RSS feeds has been growing steadily, and now almost all websites have their own RSS feeds. This is due not only to the development of technology, but also to the strict requirements of users who want to stay up to date but not spend a lot of time searching for news – after all, one glance at the Feed Reader is enough, and if the new content seems worth reading, then it can be opened in full.

Experience shows that Google Reader and Bloglines are increasingly being used to read feeds, they have email support, and similar services are likely to play a key role in receiving news in the future.

The functionality of an RSS feed is very simple.

An RSS or Atom feed is an XML file – plain text that, like an HTML file, is assigned various tags. The file contains structured content in the form of text, but does not contain layout, navigation, or other additional information. For visual display and user engagement, any design widget is often used to link to the file.

A feed reader can use markup to recognize the time when the feed was updated or who authored the article, or it can have graphics, audio files, or links integrated into it.

A feed reader, also called a “feed aggregator,” is used not only to review subscriptions, but also to store information about which articles have already been read and are marked for further reading, and can also store old unread articles.

Importing RSS – what is it?

Importing is the process of placing an RSS link into a reader, browser, or a page on a user’s website.

At the first stage, the website plugin makes the content available via RSS in XML format. The RSS content is available in a separate frame via a special link for all site visitors. As soon as a visitor sees the RSS link, he can also copy it and use it for further pasting.

After the link is imported, the RSS feed is either called directly in the browser, implemented in an RSS reader, or displayed as a frame on the user’s website.

Once an RSS feed is integrated in one of these three ways, the software behind it updates the feed regularly. In other words, the software regularly queries the RSS provider’s server to see if there are any updates. If so, new content will immediately appear at the top of the feed.

Anyone who regularly navigates to sites with a lot of content will notice a small logo that stands out because of its orange color. This is a link to an RSS feed. We will explain what it is and what you can use it for.

RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication. This component allows you to display website content (for example, news) externally in a special structured form.

An RSS feed is a modern form of newsletter. Instead of receiving new articles by email, you can collect all the news you subscribe to in one RSS reader.

This way, you have a quick overview of new and interesting articles without having to visit all the resources separately. If you see a new article in the reader and want to continue reading, just click on the link.

RSS can be used to deliver targeted, structured information from a website in the form of text, images, audio, and video. The focus is on the short delivery of important information that can be compared to news. The user is taken to the actual post only by clicking on the link. All data formats are delivered through the RSS feed.

What is an RSS feed?

The content of a website available in RSS format is called an RSS feed.

Feeds are files whose structure is comparable to that of “regular” HTML pages. But unlike classic websites, RSS feeds are designed for content that is regularly updated.

To be able to use an RSS feed, you must subscribe to it. In general, such subscriptions work with most popular browsers and email programs, sometimes also with audio players such as iTunes or Winamp. There are also special programs for reading channels – readers – that are suitable for managing a large number of subscriptions. Online services such as Google Reader allow you to keep an overview of RSS feeds on multiple devices.

Typical applications of RSS feeds are news sites, blogs, or podcasts where the user wants to keep up to date with the latest events without having to visit the site repeatedly. In addition to RSS, the Atom format is widely used. The differences from RSS are technical in nature in the code structure, and most readers can handle both formats.

In addition to viewing the subscribed feeds, the reader usually lists the headlines from the currently selected feed. Clicking on one of these headings shows a summary of the article, and the next click opens the entire article.
